Disposal through a Hazardous Waste Collection Only:
Adhesives and glues with solvents
Antifreeze (can also be recycled)
Brake fluid (can also be recycled)
Artistic or hobby paint
Batteries (can also be recycled)
Carburetor cleaner
Concrete cleaner
Degreasers
Driveway sealer
Fertilizer
Floor/wax stripper
Fluorescent light bulbs
Furniture stripper
Gasoline and other fuels
Insect spray
Lead-based paint
Lighter fluid
Mercury thermometers
Metal cleaners
Mothballs
Oil-based paint
Oven cleaners

The following items can be poured down the drain:

Alkaline batteries (AAA–D)
Medications*
Putty, grout and caulk
Water-based blue
Empty containers **
Driveway sealer
Glazes, spackle
Latex paint***
Drain, oven & toilet cleaners

 

* Medications: While it is acceptable to place some medications in the trash, disposal through a pharmaceutical collection would be a better option.
** Empty containers can also be disposed of through recycling, unless the container has other disposal recommendations.
*** Latex paint: Latex paint is not considered a hazardous material and will not be accepted at household hazardous waste collections. The best option is to use up the paint you have. It could also be donated to a local charity, school, church or other institution. Latex paint can be disposed of in the garbage if it has been dried.
Options for drying include putting kitty litter or sand in a box and pouring the paint over the top. A waste paint hardener could be purchased as well. It costs around $2.00 and should be available at area hardware stores. Finally, if there is less than ¼ of the paint in
the can; leave the lid open for a few days and allow it to dry. The container may then be placed with your regular garbage.
